A national client contacted us on a Tuesday to inform us that they conducted an inventory and they were missing $500,000 in mayonnaise. They needed us to solve the case by that Friday. If it was an inside theft facilitated by their employees, they would only have to pay the 10% insurance deductable. If it was determined to be an outside theft, they would have to pay $500,000.
The client did not have any specific employees they suspected of being involved in the theft, therefore, we interviewed everyone on the night shift. The warehouse workers were pretty savvy and they stuck to their story of ignorance.
However, one honest soul told us about an employee who used to borrow money from him and now seemed to have plenty of cash. We zeroed in on this employee and he eventually admitted he was involved and named his six co-conspirators, which numbered seven people in all. None of the mayonnaise was recovered, but we saved the client $450,000.
